The practice of banning women from the house when they are menstruating is widespread in Western Nepal. Combatting it needs strong women prepared to take a stand and a whole change of community mindset.
For Helvetas-Nepal, retrofitting remains a niche option, worth supporting in certain cases, but not a major solution to the earthquake reconstruction effort.
Better informed women see their husbands' migration as a household livelihood strategy in which they can play their part, through managing remittances carefully.
