Learning Practical Skills, Gaining New and Better Job Opportunities

Schools and parents tend to stress the importance of academic achievement, and office jobs. This is not a viable option for every young person, and learning a vocational skill should not necessarily be considered “second best”.

About the Helvetas country program in Nepal

Helvetas Nepal has been operating in Nepal under an agreement with the Government of Nepal since 1956.  It is the largest country programme of the organization, which is active in some 30 countries around the world. Helvetas Nepal is currently implementing programmes and projects throughout the country, cooperating with many technical and social organizations. Through its work at both local and national levels, Helvetas Nepal supports activities leading to sustainable development and poverty reduction. It aims to create environments in which people have new choices and become equipped with new skills and abilities to improve their livelihoods.

Helvetas Nepal partners with local and national non-governmental organizations, private sector entities, and local and national government bodies.  It promotes the principles of decentralization and subsidiarity in decision making, implementation and accountability for development.

Our topics in Nepal

Rural Access

Lack of transport infrastructure makes it impossible for the poor to escape the poverty trap. We help people get better access to markets, schools, and hospitals.

Climate & Disaster Resilience

Every year, we support over 1,000,000 people in adapting to climate change, reducing the risks of disasters, sustainably managing natural resources, and conserving nature.

Food & Nutrition

Helvetas works to combat the world’s hunger problem by connecting disadvantaged women and men to stable supplies of affordable, nutritious and healthy food.

WASH & Water Governance

The most vulnerable communities suffer from dirty and scarce water. Annually we help up to 500,000 people get new access to drinking water and basic sanitation.

Governance & Civic Space

Helvetas pursues a society in which all people have equal opportunities, can express their opinions freely and participate in democratic decision-making.

Migration

Helvetas neither encourages nor discourages people from migration. We recognize migration as a viable livelihood strategy.

Education and Vocational Skills

Lack of education perpetuates inequality because poor countries cannot compete economically without a skilled workforce.

Private Sector Development

Youth need access to reliable, fairly paid jobs to break the cycle of poverty. Helvetas creates partnerships and promotes policies that build more inclusive economies.
