How We Work: Sustainable Impact Thanks to Localization

© Daniela Zlatanoski

Sustainable development can only succeed if the right framework conditions are in place, if the people affected support them and if they are managed locally. To achieve this, Helvetas works on a long-term basis with partners who share the same values. Every organization, every company and every authority contributes its strengths, because they know the local challenges and needs best.

How we work

At Helvetas in Kosovo, we believe sustainable change only works when it is built together with local actors, based on real needs, and carried forward by the people and institutions who are part of the system. That’s why we work in long-term partnerships with public institutions, civil society, and the private sector. Each partner brings local knowledge, experience, and trust within their communities and together we co-create solutions that are practical and relevant.
Our approach connects local realities in Kosovo with regional and global learning, while always keeping ownership where it belongs: with local actors.

Working with local partners

We work closely with institutions and organizations that understand the context best. This helps us design solutions that are realistic and grounded in everyday challenges.
Partnerships are not just about implementation, they are about shared responsibility. We look for common values, trust, and a clear understanding of the change we want to achieve together.

Strengthening capacities

By including technical support, but also broader skills like planning, coordination, leadership, and collaboration to our partners. The goal is not dependency, but stronger institutions and actors who can continue driving change independently.

Learning and adapting

We treat our work as a learning process. We regularly reflect on what works and what doesn’t, and we adjust our approaches accordingly. We also use monitoring and evidence to improve processes and to ensure accountability to both partners and donors.

Working beyond projects

Change does not happen through projects alone. That’s why we also engage in dialogue with institutions and other actors on policies, systems, and reforms that shape development outcomes.
