Applied Research of Biodegradable Coconut-based Pallets
Helvetas is an independent organization for development based in Switzerland with affiliated organizations in Germany and the United States. Active in Vietnam since 1995, Helvetas has been promoting sustainable agriculture, inclusive economic development, biodiversity conservation, and green innovation, particularly in collaboration with small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Within the framework of the European Union-funded SWITCH-Asia Programme, Helvetas is implementing the four-year project Circular Economy Cocoa: From Bean to Bar (2022–2026). The project aims to develop circular economy solutions in cocoa and other agri-food sectors, leading to equitable economic growth decoupled from harmful environmental impacts.
Vietnam, the world’s sixth-largest coconut producer, generates over 1.3 million tons of husk, shell, and coir waste annually. Most of this biomass is discarded or burned, causing pollution, while only a small portion is processed into low-value products. Innovative uses are needed to enhance value and reduce environmental pressure.
Globally, coconut husk pallets are emerging as a renewable, biodegradable alternative to wooden and plastic pallets, meeting phytosanitary standards and reducing deforestation. In Vietnam, the industry is still nascent, with a few companies exploring this opportunity.
However, market adoption faces barriers such as limited load-bearing capacity, poor water resistance, and susceptibility to mold, often due to inconsistent raw material quality.
Helvetas seeks a qualified consulting team or firm to conduct applied research and field testing to improve the technical performance and market readiness of coconut-based pallets. Results will be shared with businesses to promote adoption, generate income, and support smallholder livelihoods in the Mekong Delta.
