Discussions focused on key topics such as the National Water Strategy of Tajikistan 2040, priorities for groundwater management, strengthening policy and legal frameworks
On April 16, the first roundtable on “Improving the Institutional and Legal Framework for Groundwater Management” took place in Dushanbe.
The event was organized within the framework of the Groundwater Management Project in Sughd Region of Tajikistan (GWMP), implemented by Helvetas Tajikistan and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), in collaboration with the Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan. The roundtable also featured international experts Bota Sharipova (IHE), Jenniver Sehring (IHE), and Ainur Kokimova (IGRAC).
The roundtable brought together a diverse group of experts and practitioners from government institutions, academia, international organizations, and the donor community. It served as an important platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and developing coordinated approaches to sustainable groundwater management.
Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Main Department of Geology, the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation, the National University, and other relevant institutions. Discussions focused on key topics such as the National Water Strategy of Tajikistan 2040, priorities for groundwater management, strengthening policy and legal frameworks, improving inter-agency coordination at the basin level, and preparations for an upcoming study visit to Uzbekistan.
The discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening the regulatory framework, adopting modern groundwater management approaches, and enhancing scientific and technical cooperation.
As a result, participants developed practical recommendations aimed at improving groundwater governance, strengthening institutional coordination, and fostering international collaboration.
