Sports, Youth and Cooperation: Football Tournament in Sughd Region

On 8 May 2026, a football tournament was held in the Ovchiqalacha Jamoat of B. Gafurov District, Sughd Region, which is one of the pilot areas of the Groundwater Management Project in Sughd Region, Tajikistan (GWMP), implemented by HELVETAS Tajikistan and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The tournament brought together teams from border communities and was organized with the direct support of the Syr Darya River Basin Organization and the Groundwater Management Project.

The main objective of the event was to bring local youth together, promote sports, and strengthen friendly relations among communities within the project area, while also raising public awareness about the project’s activities in the field of groundwater resource management.

Such initiatives not only encourage a healthy lifestyle and the development of sports among young people but also foster cooperation between border communities on environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources, which are among the key objectives of the project.

The tournament took place in an atmosphere of friendship, mutual understanding, and active participation of residents from the border jamoat.
