Discussion of the Roadmap for the Modernization of Groundwater Monitoring

The development of the Roadmap will become an important step toward establishing a more modern, coordinated, and sustainable groundwater monitoring system in Sughd Region and may serve as a practical basis for further scaling up at the national level.

On 5 May 2026, a working meeting dedicated to the development of a Roadmap for the modernization of groundwater monitoring and data management in the Tajik part of the Syr Darya River Basin was held in Dushanbe. The activity was organized within the framework of the Groundwater Management Project in Sughd Region of Tajikistan (GWMP), implemented by HELVETAS Tajikistan and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The meeting brought together representatives of relevant governmental institutions, scientific organizations, and project partners, as EQUIDEV and others. Participants discussed the current status of the groundwater monitoring system, key challenges, the need for data digitalization, strengthening interagency information exchange, and the introduction of modern approaches to data collection, analysis, and use.

Particular attention was given to the importance of reliable groundwater monitoring as a key foundation for informed decision-making in water management, climate change adaptation, and the long-term sustainable development of the region.
