The Groundwater Management Project (GWMP) in Sughd, Tajikistan, champions a balanced approach to groundwater use, ensuring every community has reliable access to clean water. By improving monitoring, governance, and efficiency, the GWMP bolsters food security, economic growth, and ecosystem vitality. Grounded in integrated water resources management, the project promotes participatory decision-making and lays the foundation for a national policy framework that secures groundwater resilience in the face of climate change.
The GWMP will improve groundwater management and water use efficiency to stabilize extractions and protect water quality from pollution. It will set up regular monitoring to gather data for informed decision-making and groundwater modeling. Using integrated water resources management, the project combines surface and groundwater use and involves all stakeholders in governance. Pilot activities will test these approaches and shape a clear national policy and legal framework that defines roles and responsibilities. Finally, the GWMP will foster transboundary cooperation to share knowledge and manage shared aquifer systems.
