Workshop and Field Visits Highlight Future of Beekeeping in Tajikistan

From 15 - 25 June 2026, a PHIRA-Science (Pollinator Health International Research Association) Experts visited Tajikistan supported by HELVETAS Tajikistan under the Climate Resilience Development Project. PHIRA-Science is a non-profit organization, dedicated to advancing global pollinator health through robust scientific research

The mission of the visit was to assess the current status of the beekeeping sector and identify opportunities to strengthen climate-resilient rural livelihoods.

The programme included meetings with beekeepers, researchers, veterinary and government stakeholders, honey buyers, equipment suppliers, and regional beekeeper groups, as well as site visits to apiaries and key institutions. Discussions highlighted both the diversity of experiences across regions and the shared challenges facing the sector, particularly in relation to disease management, queen breeding, technical capacity, and market access.

A key milestone of the mission was the Workshop on Beekeeping held on 23 June 2026 in Dushanbe at the Hilton Hotel. The event brought together representatives from multiple regions of Tajikistan and provided an in-depth platform for dialogue on sector priorities, constraints, and future development pathways. PHIRA-Science experts delivered technical presentations, followed by extended discussions with beekeepers.

The visit confirmed Tajikistan’s strong potential to develop a competitive and climate-resilient beekeeping industry, supported by its rich biodiversity and long beekeeping tradition. At the same time, it highlighted the need for coordinated national efforts to strengthen bee health systems, improve technical capacity, enhance honey quality standards, and expand opportunities for sustainable growth and rural livelihoods.
