As part of the World Bank project Strengthening of Water and Irrigation Management in Tajikistan” (SWIM), work has begun on development of a Basin Plan for Water Resources Management in the Vakhsh River Basin for the period up to 2040
The present assignment aims to support the preparation of the River Basin Management Plan, including the development of technical, institutional, environmental, economic, and governance measures to support sustainable water management in the basin. The assignment will be implemented in accordance with the methodological requirements approved under MEWR Order No. 34 dated 14.06.2023, including preparation of RRBMP Books 1-6, GIS atlas, database integration into the National Water Information System (NWIS), and institutional strengthening of the Vakhsh RBO and RBC.
The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MEWR) is responsible for coordinating and implementing basin planning and river basin governance reforms.
The assignment is being carried out by a consortium of international organizations GFA Consulting Group and HELVETAS Germany.
When drafting the plan, it intends to consider not just the current situation but also long-term changes. Priorities include using water wisely, boosting the efficiency of hydro power and irrigation, strengthening resilience to climate change and protecting aquatic ecosystems.
