Strengthening Groundwater Management Through International Knowledge Exchange
On September 14th 2026 in the framework of the 53rd Congress of the Internation Association of Hydrogeologists taking place in Budapest 14-18 September, professors from Tajik National University and Mining Metallurgical Institute of Tajikistan took part in the Field Trip to Danube-Tisza Interfluve. Participation of academic representatives is supported by the Groundwater Management Project in Sughd, Tajikistan.
It was a valuable opportunity to observe how groundwater flow systems shape landscapes, wetlands, vegetation, and surface-water features. The visit demonstrated the importance of understanding groundwater as a connected system rather than as isolated wells or water bodies. Key lessons were that detailed hydrogeological investigations reveal complex local and regional flow patterns, how groundwater levels and ecosystems can be strongly affected by groundwater abstraction, land-use change, drainage and canal construction.
These lessons are also highly relevant for Central Asian region, where increasing water demand, climate change and land-use pressures create growing challenges for sustainable groundwater management. For the groundwater management project in Sughd Region, the field experience reinforces the importance of combining geological and hydrogeological information with groundwater-level monitoring, surface observations and an understanding of recharge and discharge processes.
The experience provides useful perspectives for strengthening groundwater assessment, managed aquifer recharge planning and evidence-based water management in Tajikistan.
