From September 29 to October 5, within the framework of the GWMP, financed by the Government of Switzerland and implemented by Helvetas Tajikistan in partnership with IGRAC, IHE, and YGPE the Aquifer Box Model activity was conducted in Sughd Region. The activity took place in six jamoats across J. Rasulov, Spitamen, and Asht districts, engaging farmers, water operators, civil servants, and women from local communities.
Using a transparent model filled with sediments and water, participants explored how groundwater is stored, replenished, and moves underground - and how it connects with rivers and other surface waters. Hands-on demonstrations showed how pollution and excessive pumping can affect a shared aquifer, neighboring water users, and ecosystems.
By making these usually invisible processes visible, the activity helped participants better understand local groundwater challenges and the importance of protecting and using this shared resource sustainably.
