Bishkek Discusses Waste Management Initiatives

Today, December 9, 2025, Bishkek hosted a conference to review recent results and initiatives on solid waste management in Kyrgyzstan.

The event brought together representatives of the Presidential Administration, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, the State Agency for Civil Service and Local Self-Government, as well as municipal leaders and civil society organizations.
The conference highlighted the outcomes of joint efforts by international partners and government agencies.

Over the past year, the project reached four regions, six districts, and thirty-one municipalities. District and municipal action plans for improving solid waste management services were developed and implemented. A grant program totaling 80 million soms supported these plans, alongside 31 capacity-building grants and training on ten key topics, including tariffs, participatory budgeting, and waste management regulations.

Exchange visits and a study tour to Lithuania provided valuable insights into international best practices.

Looking ahead to 2026, the focus will remain on advancing legal frameworks for service delivery, including waste management, implementing grant programs for local initiatives, and providing training, consultations, and coaching for local governments and municipal enterprises.

The event was organized under the “Public Service Improvement Project,” supported by the Government of Switzerland and implemented by HELVETAS and the Development Policy Institute.
