On 18 June 2026, representatives from the private sector, financial institutions, government institutions, business associations, civil society and international development partners gathered at Tech Park Prishtina to officially launch the Greening Private Enterprises in Kosovo (GPEK) project.
The event marked the beginning of a five-year project (2026-2031) that will support Kosovo's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in becoming more competitive, resource-efficient and sustainable while responding to the growing demands of export markets.
Opening the event, representatives of the Government of Kosovo, the Embassy of Switzerland, the Embassy of Sweden and Helvetas highlighted that the green transition is increasingly becoming an economic opportunity for businesses, creating new prospects for innovation, investment and market competitiveness.
Jeton Mehmeti, Deputy Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation.
During the event, participants were introduced to GPEK's overall approach and its three core components (INFORM, ENABLE and TRANSFORM) which will work together to improve access to information, strengthen green business services and finance, promote innovation, and create better conditions for SMEs to invest in sustainable practices.
Over the next five years, the project will work with businesses, financial institutions, business support organizations, innovation actors, media and public institutions to strengthen the broader ecosystem that supports the green transition of Kosovo's SMEs.
Beate K. Elsaesser, Head of International Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Kosovo.
The launch event also introduced some of the project's upcoming initiatives, including work on green finance, business development services, policy dialogue and the GPEK Challenge Fund, which will support innovative green business solutions through grants.
Sara Lindblom, Acting Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden in Pristina.
By facilitating collaboration between the private sector, financial institutions, business support organizations and public institutions, GPEK aims to strengthen the ecosystem that supports green business development. By improving the way businesses access information, services, finance and innovation, the project seeks to create lasting changes that continue generating value well beyond the life of the project, helping Kosovo's private sector become more resilient, competitive and prepared for the opportunities of the green economy.
Greening Private Enterprises in Kosovo (GPEK) is a project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), co-funded by Sweden and implemented by Helvetas.
