Extensive competence across six working areas

HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation’s team of advisors offers services in six different fields of development work: Water and Infrastructure; Environment and Climate Change; Rural Economy, Skills Development and Education; Governance and Peace; Knowledge and Learning.
Water and infrastructure

Access to safe drinking
water and sanitation

Water Sanitation Burkina Faso
Worldwide, 800 million people have no access to clean drinking water and sanitary facilities. Therefore, improved water supply, the construction of latrines, along with advocacy work in favour of fair water policies, are part of HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation’s core work. We also build paths and suspension bridges to give rural people access to education and better income.
Environment and Climate Change

Measures to combat
climate change

Global climate change is threatening people’s livelihoods. People in the South are the worst affected. HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation helps people to protect themselves from environmental risks and to develop appropriate cropping systems, and promotes the sustainable use and conservation of soils, forests and water resources.
Governance and Peace

Participation and peaceful conflict resolution

HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation works towards a society in which all people have equal opportunities, can express their opinions freely and participate in democratic decision-making processes. Through participatory and culturally sensitive processes we contribute to conflict prevention and their peaceful resolution.
Rural Economy

Agriculture drives

Lack of land, poor soil fertility, inadequate access to inputs and know-how mean that millions of people currently suffer from chronic hunger. HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation supports men and women to manage their resources better, balancing their needs with long term sustainability. We help farmers to establish better market linkages, preferably with Fair Trade buyers.
Skills Development and Education

Greater opportunities through education

Education, Laos
The situation in most developing countries is characterised by high rates of illiteracy, low levels of school enrolment and poor job opportunities for school-leavers. HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation offers young adults in rural areas vocational training and invests in teacher training. We pay particular attention to education and skill building among women and girls.
Knowledge and Learning

Professionalism grows from shared experiences

HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation supports the sharing of knowledge and experiences at individual and organisational levels. We use online networks, facilitate workshops and develop other participatory tools and methods. And we also provide thematic advice on gender and social equity, inter-cultural communication, knowledge management, and impact assessments.
