Helvetas helps connect disadvantaged women and men to affordable, nutritious and healthy food. In 2019, we increased food security and access to balanced diets for 31,000 people.
Fighting hunger through food security
Hunger is a daily reality for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, leaving them at risk for serious health issues and impaired cognitive development. The problem has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 crisis, ongoing conflicts and growing inequality, leaving more than 800 million children and adults struggling to access adequate and nutritious food. At the same time, more than 1.9 billion people are overweight.
Feeding a growing world population will require global coordination and action. The foundation of our food systems is threatened by the effects of climate change, deteriorating natural resources, and an aging rural labor force. The world must adapt to meet these challenges with smart innovations such as solar drying technologies or nutrition awareness building in schools that keep sustainable food production and consumption in balance.
United Nations Development Program
Helvetas works to ensure disadvantaged groups have sustainable and equitable access to natural resources, technical and financial services, and markets. We build partnerships among public, private and civil society actors to create functioning and efficient food systems. These partners advance sustainable agriculture practices, including in fragile contexts, and work alongside Helvetas to advocate for policies that increase the availability of affordable, nutritious and healthy food.
